Can I Use Jewelry If I Have Sensitive Skin?Featured

The simple answer? Maybe. Gold is an allergen but it’s nickel that’s the real danger for those with contact dermatitis. Nickel isn’t just an allergen or a top allergen…nickel is frequently the number one most common allergen on published allergen lists. It is difficult to find metals without nickel in them — even if you use non-metal jewelry, pay attention to clasps and earring pieces. What helps is if the nickel is bonded extremely well, so that the chances of it rubbing off and causing a reaction are minimized. Because of how difficult it can be, and because hypoallergenic is who we are, we’re always on the lookout for jewelry for those with sensitive skin. We already work with Yciar Castillo for makeup, and were thrilled to learn that she launched a new jewelry line, with skin safety as something that she tries to prioritize!

My grandmother was a woman who loved to accessorize. Growing up, she used to show me her different pieces of jewelry and tell me the stories behind each piece. I was fascinated by every anecdote and the history and provenance of each item. This is where my love affair with jewelry began.
As I grew older, I began developing an interest in semi-precious stones. My cousins and I knew exactly what our birthstones were and the properties that came with each. So it was no surprise that when I decided to choose a hobby and study again, I chose to take a short course in metalsmithing and jewelrymaking.
quinntas1

Being a makeup artist by profession, I am very conscious of how skin can react to anything that it comes in contact with, from our skincare and cosmetic products, to the detergents we use on our clothing, the fabrics our clothes are made of, and the materials and metals used in the accessories we wear. When I started making my pieces, I was lucky a friend of mine helped me test my gold earrings and gave me a lot feedback. Another friend also brought my handmade silver earrings to a dermatologist who performed a nickel test with a special solution. Nickel is a metal that is found and used in a lot of costume jewellery. It is the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis in adults. My jewelry tested negative for nickel. This gave me the assurance that my pieces are safe for many people with sensitive skin.

quinntas2

I love being creative and working with my hands. I started making jewelry as something to do part time, I post my pieces on Instagram and have called my jewelry Quinntas – after my son, Quinn.

For best results: if you think you might have contact dermatitis, ask your dermatologist for a patch test.

Bridal Beauty: 1920s Nostalgic NuptialsFeatured

By Jess Arnaudin

With the popularity of Downtown Abbey and the cinematic adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby”, 1920’s fashion came roaring back into popular culture. Many modern brides are embracing the glamour and decadence of this bygone era. With these tips for incorporating vintage elegance into your big day, you’ll be the “Cat’s Meow”!

THE DRESS.
1920s-Dress-WeddingCollage-InSKINsummer2013

Look for trademark vintage details such as the dropped waist, delicate traditional lace, and art deco details. Don’t shy away from lots of jewelry, but keep the look from turning into a costume by opting for genuine pearls and authentic vintage pieces (this could be your “Something Old”)!

THE SKIN.

AG-Robe-SmilingHandsToFace-Isaac2015-8O8A6474-sm-sq-20160212

Every bride wants to be radiant on her wedding day, but glowing skin doesn’t happen overnight. Start investing in your skin by booking facials regularly and adopting a regimen built for your skin’s specific needs. Try using a brightening line like Illuminants+. Packed with a blend of three antioxidants (vitamin C, green tea, and rice phytic acid) you’ll be glowing before you can say, “Gee Whiz!”

Stress over the flowers, not your skin. At your wedding, you want to be breaking out in song, in dance, in happy tears…not in anything else! We can help with a customized Skincare Routine and Facial-Spa Package to get your skin in shape for the big day, as well as hypoallergenic Wedding Day Makeup. You can spread the glow, too, with wedding favors and bridal party gifts! Contact us at (212) 217 2762 or via Facebook for information. – Ed.

THE HAIR.

1920s-Hair-WeddingCollage-InSKINsummer2013

Soft curls are very romantic and can feel less fussy than a proper updo. Looking for something more retro? A deeply parted side bun with neatly placed waves is right on trend. Add a touch of whimsy by incorporating a headband or birdcage veil.

THE MAKEUP.

1920s-Makeup-WeddingCollage-InSKINsummer2013

Get “Dolled Up” with sheer foundation and dramatic red lips. Try ultra-light Skintangible “BBBB Cream” SPF 30 for your base. This barely-there, skin-matching formula will provide weightless coverage (even if you dance into the night!) For lips, try a deep shade like Sheer Lip Tint  in “Cherry Fudge” or choose a bright crimson like Subtle Shine Lipstick in “Big Red” . Finally, pump up the drama with smudge, smear, and flake-proof lashes. Ooh-La-Lash! Volumizing Mascara is the “Bee’s Knees”.

OTHER “BRIDE” IDEAS:

Crucial tips for your wedding look!

SCHEDULE A TRIAL. Practice makes perfect and bridal makeup application is no different. Making time for a thorough consultation is vital!

QUICK-CHANGE ARTIST. Wear a garment that is easy to remove. It’s a detail often overlooked. Contorting out of a tight top after hair and makeup are done is no small feat. Do yourself (and your beauty squad!) a favor: wear a front-button blouse or robe.

EYE DO. Wedding emotions can run high. Apply eye drops frequently before makeup to turn teary-eyed redness into bright-eyed twinkle. And use smear-proof mascara!

How long have you been surfing?
My first surf lesons were in La Union in 2002! So 13 years.

Elaine Abonal - Siargao 2013
Why do you do it?
I do it because it has become such an integral part of my life. It is my exercise, my alone time, my meditation, my job. I love it so much and I can’t imagine my life without it!
Why do so many fall in love with surfing?
I learn something new every time I go surfing. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it weren’t for it. There’s knowing your limits but not being afraid to push yourself; realizing that it’s great to have a good ride, but it takes more to appreciate, even enjoy, getting back up after a big wipe out. I learn a lot about people; age differences disappear and languages become insignificant. You see that it doesn’t matter who you are, where you come from, or how much money you make. You respect each other’s differences and share a common passion for being in the water that called to you.
Instagram-ElaineAbonal-FloatingEmeraldWaterCorals-20150804
How do you train for it?
Surfing is a very physical sport. I eat healthy, surf as much as I can (daily if possible), do yoga so that I’m flexible, and get enough sleep.
How did you get started?
I was in Florida in high school and saw surfers and the whole surfing lifestyle. As soon as I got back home to the Philippines, I researched about surfing lessons, went on a trip with 4 boys (I was the only girl) and never stopped since!
You talk a lot about safety…
Surfing is not as hard as it seems but it’s not as easy as it looks either. Never underestimate the power of the ocean. Conditions change every day, every hour. It’s important to respect the ocean and know our limits. As surfers, we’re not only dealing with ourselves out there but also other people and their surfboards. Knowing basic safety is to protect others as much as ourselves.
Safety is so important. Surfista Travels organizes everything (transportation, accommodation and lessons) for people who want a safe and worry-free trip to the best surf spots. And this includes sun safety. Staying protected from the sun is a real concern because I live and breathe surfing. My lifestyle and job means that I am in the water and under the sun a LOT and at different times of the day. I try to avoid peak UVB hours but sometimes waves are too good to miss, or surf lessons get extended. I wear rash guards but my face, legs, and hands are still exposed. I make it a point to slather on sunscreen repeatedly and remind Surfistas to do the same!
Armada-SurfistaGift-InskinJunAug2014-20140310
Why do you like using Armada Sport as a sunscreen?
Armada‘s my favorite, I can rely on it to protect my skin while not having it get in the way of what I do. I love that it’s not sticky or thick. It doesn’t feel hot even if I’m not yet in the water. I won it in a surfing association’s raffle once, and all the surfers there said it was the BEST sunscreen ever, so I started using it. It’s been in my beach bag since.
I LOVE Armada Sport because of many reasons! It’s not sticky or heavy when applied so it’s not uncomfortable on my skin. It’s the only sunscreen that I’ve ever used that doesn’t only protect me from the sun but helps IMPROVE my skin condition at the same time. I had skin problems where my skin tone became uneven and I couldn’t be under the sun and my skin was too sensitive for other sunscreens. Ever since I started using Armada Sport it has slowly been healing!
 Skinthus-ArmadaSport-Beach3Hands-SurfistaElaineAbonal-12Aug2014
What was your most memorable moment in surfing?
I can’t think of one particular moment since I’ve been doing it forever. It’s more like a mix of different moments that I treasure – surfing in beautiful conditions during sunrise or sunset with my good friends and good vibes and lots of laughter in the water, with a rainbow in the background for example – those are moments that I treasure the most!
You feel prettiest when…
My skin is SUCH a big part of who I am because it represents two major things about me — being a surfer and being Filipina. I always get complimented on my skin tone wherever I go in the world. 🙂
I feel prettiest when I am in my bikini, with no make up, barefoot and with a flower in my hair – AND surrounded by people who I love and love me just as I am!
Instagram-ElaineAbonal-SurfingPupppiesSunscreenHeaven-20150804
Do you have any tips for fans out there for fitness, sun protection and/or training?
Always put VMV Armada Sport 70 sunscreen – ALWAYS – whether you’ll only be out in the sun for 15 minutes or an hour, eat healthy because anything that you put in your body will be your fuel, do something active everyday. It takes WORK to be fit, it doesn’t come from just looking at pictures. Also don’t forget to RELAX & HAVE FUN!
Skinthus-ArmadaSport-SurfistaFB-StokedWahineClassic7Oct2013-20130907
What’s your daily skin care and/or makeup?
I only use VMV Hypoallergenics products. I don’t use so much makeup on the island, except for blush and Ooh-La-Lash!. I pretty much use VMV Armada Sport sunscreen as soon as I get out of my room during the day. At night, I always wash my face & moisturize. I’m under the sun and in a lot of extreme conditions so it’s good to have a daily skin regimen.

How long have you been kite boarding?
I’ve been kiteboarding for 5 years, doing boardsports as far as i can remember 🙂

Why do you do it?
I am a very active and outdoorsy person and I like learning new things…especially if it requires using a board! I got introduced to kiteboarding after a few good years of wakeboarding behind the cable. Kiteboarding is a sport that merges boardsports, particularly, wakeboarding/surfing and sailing (also one of the things that I started learning in recent years.) The best thing about kiteboarding is that I do not need a boat or a cable to get a sensation of stoke. It’s the greenest and most progressive boardsport out there and I love it.
How do you train for it?
I go to the gym once in a while but I get bored being there if it’s for more than an hour and if I’m alone, so I do a lot of alternative outdoor training which is similar to the movements in kiteboarding, such as wakeboarding, surfing, hula hoop, water ballet, yoga…and recently, I started trapeze with Trapeze Philippines. I definitely prefer being outdoors any day if I can and if it’s not too cold, raining, or too hot. I also run a lot just for the cardio.
Paula-Hoola-Beach
How did you get started?
I started kiteboarding when I moved back to Boracay island after living and working in CWC and basically wakeboarding everyday. I tried kiting once before and was unsuccessful. There is no surf in Boracay so this was a good option. I was hesitant in the beginning as the kite can be overwhelming sometimes but my friends were really helpful when I was starting out and that gave me a lot of inspiration and motivation to just move forward. It took a lot of dedication, patience, waking up at 5am to catch the early session, but everything was worth. Every time I get on the board and go, it’s worth it.
Why do you like using Armada Sport as a sunscreen?
The Armada Sport sunscreen is really effective, especially for somebody like me who uses sunscreen constantly, and who reapplies constantly, who’s under the sun the whole day. It doesn’t clog my pores and lets my skin breath underneath it. It’s very hard for me to find the right sunscreen that will not give me breakouts and whiteheads from clogged pores.
Paula-TripleS-applyingArmdada
What was your most memorable moment in kite boarding or a competition?
There are a lot of memorable moments but for sure the most memorable would be Sunset sessions at Seco Island, Philippines with my other Filipina kiter friends. I have this yearly Girls Kite Camp called Girl on Fire that I host for my kiter girlfriends. We go to this remote island off of Antique and camp there for 3 days and just kite and hang out.
You feel prettiest when…
…I’m out kiting/surfing or wakeboarding in super sunny Philippines, in my Roxy Bikini and VMV Armada Sport sunscreen!
Do you have any tips for fans out there for fitness, sun protection and/or training?
Make your fitness routine as fun as possible so it doesn’t feel like a bore and you get motivated to doing it, instead of it being a dreaded daily chore.
What’s your daily skin care and/or makeup?
My daily skin regimen is includes my VMV Re-Everything Cleansing Cream, Re-Everything Treatment Toner and Re-Everything Cream: Anti-Age Primary Treatment. Then, Armada Sport, of course.
Makeup? no need. I wear Armada sunscreen that’s all! 🙂

How long have you been racing?
Started racing back in 2008 and have been hooked ever since.
Why do you do it?
Racing is the icing on the cake. The cake is the fitness, lifestyle, health (mental and physical), focus, determination, friendships, energy, etc. That is why I do it. Like everything, forming a habit is the most difficult part of it, but once you get over the initial hurdle, you will not turn back. It is a healthy, although somewhat costly, addiction! Although the costs associated with other lifestyles could be just as expensive.
How do you train for it?
The body is an amazing machine. It adapts to almost anything as long as you give it time to do so. For my Ironman and Ironman 70.3 distances, I have been following a detailed training program found in the Be Iron Fit, time efficient training secrets for ultimate fitness by Don Fink. There are 3 distinct programs within his book: just to finish, intermediate and competitive. I used the just to finish one for my first at Ironman Canada in 2013 and did exactly that — just finished…with a smile. For Ironman Melbourne in 2015, I followed the intermediate program which prepared me to approach the race a bit more aggressively — I managed to shave almost 3 hours from my Canada journey. I believe in the method of training he writes about and it works for me. We are all different so this approach may not work for all. As an executive working full time and with a busy family, his programs are perfect for me. All training is based on heart rate zones and time as opposed to distance, except for the swim which is strictly distance-based on different exertion levels. With this approach, I am able to schedule my training around my work and family, and know that I’ll be able to accomplish my personal goals. Depending on the race, for the Ironman distance, I start training 6 months out, 6 days a week, several days with 2 workouts a day. Majority is all swim / bike and run, with the time and efforts going up as the weeks progress. As long as you have a decent base, it is doable and your body will continue to adapt to the efforts you are putting it through.
How did you get started?
I got started upon returning from a trip to Argentina looking like a blimp! I did not like what I saw nor how I felt. I came across a book called Marathon Training For Non-Runners and picked it up. I was a non-runner and perfectly suited for it. 16 weeks later the book was finished and I completed my first ever marathon in Quebec! Due to the huge load in such a short time that I put my legs through, I got injured and got a stress fracture on my left shin. Prior to the race. I was determined to finish it! Upon my return home and getting rid of crutches, I bought an entry level Giant road bike in Jakarta. I felt I was able to continue with my fitness without pounding my legs. During one of the many rides, I met a few triathletes who offered that I joined them. Problem: I couldn’t swim. No problem: I hired Akbar Nasution, Olympic swimmer for Indonesia in the Sydney Olympics. Within 5 tough months of swimming 4 times a week I completed the Bintan Sprint Triathlon! The rest is history.
Why do you like using Armada Sport as a sunscreen?
Armada Sport is a great sunscreen which truly works. It keeps me well protected while I am completely exposed to the sun while I swim, bike and run. I have tubes of it stashed everywhere as I go through a ton of it. Nice that it stays on even after a hard swim although I still re-apply depending on the distance of the race or training session.
What was your most memorable moment in a triathlon?
Finishing my first — Bintan Sprint Triathlon! I remember feeling the same emotion of accomplishment then as I did when crossing the line during the Ironman events. The difference at the Ironman’s is that I had my family there cheering me and supporting me all the way. Having my daughter, Ariel, at the finish line and placing the finishers medal around my neck was unforgettable!
You feel most handsome when…
I feel handsome all the time!
Do you have any tips for fans out there for fitness, sun protection and/or training?
If you are thinking of starting any sort of fitness regimen for whatever reason, start slow. Educate yourself ( internet, forums, teams, training sessions, etc.) Join a group. Hire a coach. Tell the world. Sign up for an event even before you start. You will not back out of it. At the beginning, having support from your family, friends, peers is very motivating and will get you out of bed to train, race, etc. Surround yourself with common interest individuals. Don’t neglect your family as they will be part of your support. Lastly, listen to your body, it knows best. Missing a session or two will not make a difference on a long term plan or habit. So if you feel you need to rest, then do so. Your body will thank you in the long term. Pushing too much in too little time is an automatic injury and one which I ignored in my early beginnings.
