Skincare To Swipe Right On

Skincare To Swipe Right On

You’re so good about eating well (your friends say you should start charging for tips), exercising daily (people call out your name when you walk into the gym), sleeping more, controlling stress, and being happier (your new nickname is sensei). For your skin, you’ve done your research (you’re on a first-name basis with beauty bloggers), you’ve become a formidable “skintellectual” and have your alpha hydroxies and antioxidants down (your dermatologist asked for your opinion about a new sunscreen). And you’ve finally, carefully chosen a skincare partner. This is the moment of truth: you’ve hit the end of what you can control. Your skin is now largely in the hands of the products you’ve selected to deliver on their promises and (please!) not cause damage you’ll have to correct later. Your power over your skincare product ends as soon as you put it on. Will it do what it says it does? Is it as safe as it says it is?

Skincare As Dating

We use the word “partner” for a reason. When dating, you work on you, scope out the options, identify a possibility, do some background checking, gauge his or her friends and then…you wait and see. Sometimes that trust is well placed and leads to a rewarding relationship. Other times, you’re let down. You might get hurt. You need time to recover. You’re left with scars.
Luckily, skincare needn’t entail as big a leap of faith as love. There are well-established standards of proof that are far more reliable than, “but he seemed so nice!”

Beauty is “Proof,” Proof Beauty

Slightly tweaked, Keats’ famous lines are an ode to that gold standard of scientific validity: the randomized, double-blind, evidence-based clinical study — which we at VMV Hypoallergenics have always done. Our investigative studies are scientifically robust and impressively so. One published study is eyebrow-raising; we have over 75. In the hyperbolic world of cosmetics, true beauty lies in evidence. Putting your faith in the double-blind study is far better than flying blind.

Research Terms To Swipe Right On

“Clinically tested” can mean lots of things. Some tests are more subjective, mainly consisting of people sharing their thoughts about a product (“99 out of 100 women say they saw an 80% reduction in wrinkles”). There is nothing wrong with this type of test, but it does rely primarily on the test subjects’ own opinions of what they see in the mirror, how they feel, and even how much they like the brand and the type of product they were given. Other tests use qualitative data like before-and-after photos. While helpful, these photographs are generally considered to be less conclusive than quantitative data such as objective measurements of certain biological aspects of the skin using specialized equipment. Rare in cosmetics, double-blind (meaning the subjects never know what they’re using). “Evidence-based” means randomized, double-blind trials with quantitative data — which is standard in prescription pharmaceuticals, and at VMV.

A Well-Rounded Partner

“Evidence-based” is in our safety as much as our efficacy. A study on our VH-Rating System, the only hypoallergenic “grading” system of its kind, was published in one of the leading journals on contact dermatitis and is proven to be effective at increasing customer safety, showing less than 0.1% reported reactions in 30 years. A new patch test study with multiple VMV products on hundreds of subjects showed zero irritant and allergic reactions, even in conditions allowing for greater contact of products on the skin and expected to produce reactions earlier and faster than normal. Another study on the non-comedogenicity of virgin coconut oil was presented at the American Contact Dermatitis Society (ACDS) meeting.
Our research includes investigative and case studies, too, and not just for cosmetics. Our research covers issues as diverse as nutrition and acne, psoriasis, pemphigus vulgaris, and mycosis fungoides (a type of cancer of the immune system). Such research is not cosmetic, but adds to our understanding of the skin, diseases, treatments, and treatment mechanisms. This knowledge contributes directly to how we develop all our products — from cosmeceuticals to basic care and even makeup.
One published study is a major achievement, unusual for cosmetics. We have over 75. We might be a skin health and beauty brand, but proof is our business.
proof
100% Skin Love
These medical measures are objective, well-proven, consistent and replicable. They reduce the risk of disappointment and adverse effects significantly.
It’s a pretty awesome thing, actually: unlike some dates, skincare that looks this good — this scientifically, objectively robust — “on paper” can be relied on. It will keep its promises. It will deliver. It’ll help you feel good, too. It’ll boost your confidence. It’ll never judge you, just help you. It’ll never ask you for anything in return. It’ll love you for life. It’ll love your friends and family. It’ll protect you. It’ll be loyal, and it’ll get more rewarding the longer you stay with it.
The skin is the body’s largest organ. It can show signs of internal problems before even a blood test, MRI or x-ray. Our skin is fundamental to how we live in the world. It controls our temperature, it expands and contracts as we need it to, it protects us. It is vital to how we sense fear and love. So much of intimacy and sexual attraction is about skin and touch. Skin-to-skin contact is important not just for sensuality but for us as humans  — studies have shown that babies suffer developmentally and physically by not being held enough; doctors advocate skin-on-skin contact between mothers and newborns for improved bonding, physical and emotional development and healing (even improved survival rates from body warmth). And our skin’s health is how we present ourselves to the world. Clear, healthy, vibrant skin is a great ingredient to that happy stew of goodness that helps you feel good about yourself.
Your relationship with your skin is not something to be taken lightly. At the very least, skincare should be expected to keep the promise built right into its name: care.

VMV Saved My Skin: Soak My Thirsty Skin

#SavedMySkin Story: Soak My Thirsty Skin (without triggering an allergic reaction)!

Moisturizers spread well and sit on the skin for a long time, and the skin absorbs them well, too. That’s why moisturizing is a great way to hit two birds with one stone! The right moisturizers can help you handle your sensitive skin, AND keep eczema and rosacea flare-ups to a bare-faced minimum— at the same time!
Very Sensitive Skin:
The right moisturizers can help skin that is allergic, atopic, or with certain barrier-compromised or inflammatory conditions such as rosacea and psoriasis. They can specifically strengthen the skin’s barrier layer, supplement fatty acids native to skin, and are anti-inflammatory and allergen-free (obviously!). This helps manage the condition, sooth the skin, and prevent flare-ups keeping you and your skin cool and happy all day long!
For eczema and rosacea, a moisturizer with antimicrobials that target the microorganisms common to these skin conditions is also helpful. For rosacea, try Red Better Daily Therapy Moisturizer. For all other sensitive skin conditions, we recommend Know-It-Oil, organic virgin coconut oil or Oil’s Well Nurturing Do-It-Oil.
Do you have dry and very sensitive skin? Are you having a hard time finding a moisturizer that suits your skin without causing any allergic reactions? Here’s the story of skinthusiast Olivia S from Chicago IL and how her skin found the perfect match!

I “Dew”: Julie’s (Hypoallergenic!) Bridal Beauty Success Story

“Most bridal magazines say that wedding planning should include a skin regimen. My very first facial was at the VMV boutique in New York City. Holly, my VMV esthetician, was just amazing! I knew my skin was in great hands. After my 6-month wedding bliss facial package, I couldn’t be any happier! From experience, VMV regimens and make-up are so gentle. I simply love VMV!” – Julie

Julie’s Skin Story:

From rashes to radiance…

Julie had rather severe eczema and a bad allergic reaction to her cleanser when she started coming in for VMV facials. Holly customized a regimen and a 6-month facial package for her. Julie’s skin cleared beautifully and is glowing in her wedding photos & video —  all VMV makeup, natch! — which she emailed to Holly.
Holly’s reaction? “I just wanted to say how thankful I am to have been able to help Julie achieve her beautiful wedding skin!”
Your happy is our happy!
Problem skin may need a little longer time to get ready for the big day, or may need more targeted care. Luckily enough, this is precisely what we “dew”. Give us a call at (212) 217 2762 and we can customize a daily regimen-and-facial program for you. We can even recommend products based on allergens from your patch test results!
Why risk a major rash or acne breakout on the honeymoon? Our allergen-free, non-comedogenic makeup provides powerful performance for stage, TV, and all-day weddings, and is a great way to keep your wedding glow longer.
Congratulations, Julie! 🙂

How long have you been surfing?
My first surf lesons were in La Union in 2002! So 13 years.

Elaine Abonal - Siargao 2013
Why do you do it?
I do it because it has become such an integral part of my life. It is my exercise, my alone time, my meditation, my job. I love it so much and I can’t imagine my life without it!
Why do so many fall in love with surfing?
I learn something new every time I go surfing. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it weren’t for it. There’s knowing your limits but not being afraid to push yourself; realizing that it’s great to have a good ride, but it takes more to appreciate, even enjoy, getting back up after a big wipe out. I learn a lot about people; age differences disappear and languages become insignificant. You see that it doesn’t matter who you are, where you come from, or how much money you make. You respect each other’s differences and share a common passion for being in the water that called to you.
Instagram-ElaineAbonal-FloatingEmeraldWaterCorals-20150804
How do you train for it?
Surfing is a very physical sport. I eat healthy, surf as much as I can (daily if possible), do yoga so that I’m flexible, and get enough sleep.
How did you get started?
I was in Florida in high school and saw surfers and the whole surfing lifestyle. As soon as I got back home to the Philippines, I researched about surfing lessons, went on a trip with 4 boys (I was the only girl) and never stopped since!
You talk a lot about safety…
Surfing is not as hard as it seems but it’s not as easy as it looks either. Never underestimate the power of the ocean. Conditions change every day, every hour. It’s important to respect the ocean and know our limits. As surfers, we’re not only dealing with ourselves out there but also other people and their surfboards. Knowing basic safety is to protect others as much as ourselves.
Safety is so important. Surfista Travels organizes everything (transportation, accommodation and lessons) for people who want a safe and worry-free trip to the best surf spots. And this includes sun safety. Staying protected from the sun is a real concern because I live and breathe surfing. My lifestyle and job means that I am in the water and under the sun a LOT and at different times of the day. I try to avoid peak UVB hours but sometimes waves are too good to miss, or surf lessons get extended. I wear rash guards but my face, legs, and hands are still exposed. I make it a point to slather on sunscreen repeatedly and remind Surfistas to do the same!
Armada-SurfistaGift-InskinJunAug2014-20140310
Why do you like using Armada Sport as a sunscreen?
Armada‘s my favorite, I can rely on it to protect my skin while not having it get in the way of what I do. I love that it’s not sticky or thick. It doesn’t feel hot even if I’m not yet in the water. I won it in a surfing association’s raffle once, and all the surfers there said it was the BEST sunscreen ever, so I started using it. It’s been in my beach bag since.
I LOVE Armada Sport because of many reasons! It’s not sticky or heavy when applied so it’s not uncomfortable on my skin. It’s the only sunscreen that I’ve ever used that doesn’t only protect me from the sun but helps IMPROVE my skin condition at the same time. I had skin problems where my skin tone became uneven and I couldn’t be under the sun and my skin was too sensitive for other sunscreens. Ever since I started using Armada Sport it has slowly been healing!
 Skinthus-ArmadaSport-Beach3Hands-SurfistaElaineAbonal-12Aug2014
What was your most memorable moment in surfing?
I can’t think of one particular moment since I’ve been doing it forever. It’s more like a mix of different moments that I treasure – surfing in beautiful conditions during sunrise or sunset with my good friends and good vibes and lots of laughter in the water, with a rainbow in the background for example – those are moments that I treasure the most!
You feel prettiest when…
My skin is SUCH a big part of who I am because it represents two major things about me — being a surfer and being Filipina. I always get complimented on my skin tone wherever I go in the world. 🙂
I feel prettiest when I am in my bikini, with no make up, barefoot and with a flower in my hair – AND surrounded by people who I love and love me just as I am!
Instagram-ElaineAbonal-SurfingPupppiesSunscreenHeaven-20150804
Do you have any tips for fans out there for fitness, sun protection and/or training?
Always put VMV Armada Sport 70 sunscreen – ALWAYS – whether you’ll only be out in the sun for 15 minutes or an hour, eat healthy because anything that you put in your body will be your fuel, do something active everyday. It takes WORK to be fit, it doesn’t come from just looking at pictures. Also don’t forget to RELAX & HAVE FUN!
Skinthus-ArmadaSport-SurfistaFB-StokedWahineClassic7Oct2013-20130907
What’s your daily skin care and/or makeup?
I only use VMV Hypoallergenics products. I don’t use so much makeup on the island, except for blush and Ooh-La-Lash!. I pretty much use VMV Armada Sport sunscreen as soon as I get out of my room during the day. At night, I always wash my face & moisturize. I’m under the sun and in a lot of extreme conditions so it’s good to have a daily skin regimen.

  paularosales

How long have you been kite boarding?
I’ve been kiteboarding for 5 years, doing boardsports as far as i can remember 🙂

Why do you do it?
I am a very active and outdoorsy person and I like learning new things…especially if it requires using a board! I got introduced to kiteboarding after a few good years of wakeboarding behind the cable. Kiteboarding is a sport that merges boardsports, particularly, wakeboarding/surfing and sailing (also one of the things that I started learning in recent years.) The best thing about kiteboarding is that I do not need a boat or a cable to get a sensation of stoke. It’s the greenest and most progressive boardsport out there and I love it.
How do you train for it?
I go to the gym once in a while but I get bored being there if it’s for more than an hour and if I’m alone, so I do a lot of alternative outdoor training which is similar to the movements in kiteboarding, such as wakeboarding, surfing, hula hoop, water ballet, yoga…and recently, I started trapeze with Trapeze Philippines. I definitely prefer being outdoors any day if I can and if it’s not too cold, raining, or too hot. I also run a lot just for the cardio.
Paula-Hoola-Beach
How did you get started?
I started kiteboarding when I moved back to Boracay island after living and working in CWC and basically wakeboarding everyday. I tried kiting once before and was unsuccessful. There is no surf in Boracay so this was a good option. I was hesitant in the beginning as the kite can be overwhelming sometimes but my friends were really helpful when I was starting out and that gave me a lot of inspiration and motivation to just move forward. It took a lot of dedication, patience, waking up at 5am to catch the early session, but everything was worth. Every time I get on the board and go, it’s worth it.
Why do you like using Armada Sport as a sunscreen?
The Armada Sport sunscreen is really effective, especially for somebody like me who uses sunscreen constantly, and who reapplies constantly, who’s under the sun the whole day. It doesn’t clog my pores and lets my skin breath underneath it. It’s very hard for me to find the right sunscreen that will not give me breakouts and whiteheads from clogged pores.
Paula-TripleS-applyingArmdada
What was your most memorable moment in kite boarding or a competition?
There are a lot of memorable moments but for sure the most memorable would be Sunset sessions at Seco Island, Philippines with my other Filipina kiter friends. I have this yearly Girls Kite Camp called Girl on Fire that I host for my kiter girlfriends. We go to this remote island off of Antique and camp there for 3 days and just kite and hang out.
You feel prettiest when…
…I’m out kiting/surfing or wakeboarding in super sunny Philippines, in my Roxy Bikini and VMV Armada Sport sunscreen!
Do you have any tips for fans out there for fitness, sun protection and/or training?
Make your fitness routine as fun as possible so it doesn’t feel like a bore and you get motivated to doing it, instead of it being a dreaded daily chore.
What’s your daily skin care and/or makeup?
My daily skin regimen is includes my VMV Re-Everything Cleansing Cream, Re-Everything Treatment Toner and Re-Everything Cream: Anti-Age Primary Treatment. Then, Armada Sport, of course.
Makeup? no need. I wear Armada sunscreen that’s all! 🙂

How long have you been racing?
Started racing back in 2008 and have been hooked ever since.
Why do you do it?
Racing is the icing on the cake. The cake is the fitness, lifestyle, health (mental and physical), focus, determination, friendships, energy, etc. That is why I do it. Like everything, forming a habit is the most difficult part of it, but once you get over the initial hurdle, you will not turn back. It is a healthy, although somewhat costly, addiction! Although the costs associated with other lifestyles could be just as expensive.
How do you train for it?
The body is an amazing machine. It adapts to almost anything as long as you give it time to do so. For my Ironman and Ironman 70.3 distances, I have been following a detailed training program found in the Be Iron Fit, time efficient training secrets for ultimate fitness by Don Fink. There are 3 distinct programs within his book: just to finish, intermediate and competitive. I used the just to finish one for my first at Ironman Canada in 2013 and did exactly that — just finished…with a smile. For Ironman Melbourne in 2015, I followed the intermediate program which prepared me to approach the race a bit more aggressively — I managed to shave almost 3 hours from my Canada journey. I believe in the method of training he writes about and it works for me. We are all different so this approach may not work for all. As an executive working full time and with a busy family, his programs are perfect for me. All training is based on heart rate zones and time as opposed to distance, except for the swim which is strictly distance-based on different exertion levels. With this approach, I am able to schedule my training around my work and family, and know that I’ll be able to accomplish my personal goals. Depending on the race, for the Ironman distance, I start training 6 months out, 6 days a week, several days with 2 workouts a day. Majority is all swim / bike and run, with the time and efforts going up as the weeks progress. As long as you have a decent base, it is doable and your body will continue to adapt to the efforts you are putting it through.
How did you get started?
I got started upon returning from a trip to Argentina looking like a blimp! I did not like what I saw nor how I felt. I came across a book called Marathon Training For Non-Runners and picked it up. I was a non-runner and perfectly suited for it. 16 weeks later the book was finished and I completed my first ever marathon in Quebec! Due to the huge load in such a short time that I put my legs through, I got injured and got a stress fracture on my left shin. Prior to the race. I was determined to finish it! Upon my return home and getting rid of crutches, I bought an entry level Giant road bike in Jakarta. I felt I was able to continue with my fitness without pounding my legs. During one of the many rides, I met a few triathletes who offered that I joined them. Problem: I couldn’t swim. No problem: I hired Akbar Nasution, Olympic swimmer for Indonesia in the Sydney Olympics. Within 5 tough months of swimming 4 times a week I completed the Bintan Sprint Triathlon! The rest is history.
Why do you like using Armada Sport as a sunscreen?
Armada Sport is a great sunscreen which truly works. It keeps me well protected while I am completely exposed to the sun while I swim, bike and run. I have tubes of it stashed everywhere as I go through a ton of it. Nice that it stays on even after a hard swim although I still re-apply depending on the distance of the race or training session.
What was your most memorable moment in a triathlon?
Finishing my first — Bintan Sprint Triathlon! I remember feeling the same emotion of accomplishment then as I did when crossing the line during the Ironman events. The difference at the Ironman’s is that I had my family there cheering me and supporting me all the way. Having my daughter, Ariel, at the finish line and placing the finishers medal around my neck was unforgettable!
You feel most handsome when…
I feel handsome all the time!
Do you have any tips for fans out there for fitness, sun protection and/or training?
If you are thinking of starting any sort of fitness regimen for whatever reason, start slow. Educate yourself ( internet, forums, teams, training sessions, etc.) Join a group. Hire a coach. Tell the world. Sign up for an event even before you start. You will not back out of it. At the beginning, having support from your family, friends, peers is very motivating and will get you out of bed to train, race, etc. Surround yourself with common interest individuals. Don’t neglect your family as they will be part of your support. Lastly, listen to your body, it knows best. Missing a session or two will not make a difference on a long term plan or habit. So if you feel you need to rest, then do so. Your body will thank you in the long term. Pushing too much in too little time is an automatic injury and one which I ignored in my early beginnings.
